Jiffy Foam does the job!
I use 4mm Jiffy foam regularly in sending heavier items (around 4kg) that need protection. It's easy to work with - it cuts just by grabbing it and running an open pair of scissors through it.
Can be used as space-fill, although I prefer it as a wrap.
The 4mm thickness is good for when one wants extra protection - even so I double-layer it as my items (and my customers' purchases!) deserve to be well looked after.
