It moves evidence-based criminal profiling into a full embrace of the scientific method with respect to examining and interpreting behavioral evidence. If focuses on criminal profiling as an investigative and forensic process, helping to solve crime through an honest understanding of the nature and behavior of the most violent criminals. Throughout the text, the author outlines specific principles and practice standards for Behavioral Evidence Analysis, focusing on the application of theory and method to real cases. Criminal Profiling, Third Edition , is an ideal companion for students and professionals alike, including investigators, forensic scientists, criminologists, mental health professionals, and attorneys. Praise for the third edition: "In the third edition of this very popular textbook, Brent Turvey clearly demonstrates that criminal profiling has established itself as a scientific endeavor rather than an exercise in investigative intuition. This textbook pulls together an impressive amount of substantive knowledge from a variety of disciplines in order to provide the reader with a foundation upon which to develop a mastery of the criminal profiling process. As Turvey demonstrates throughout the text, however, there are various methodological approaches to the practice of criminal profiling. Paramount among these, he argues, is the method known as Behavioral Evidence Analysis, which is described and illustrated in great detail throughout this remarkable book." --Daniel B. Kennedy, PhD, Forensic Criminologist, University of Detroit Mercy "The third edition of Criminal Profiling is sterling!" --Stan Crowder, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Kennesaw State University, GA Praise for the previous editions: "This text documents the principles of proper criminal profiling and undertakes to establish definite criteria for professionalization...should be reviewed by anyone intent on becoming a professional criminal profiler." -AMERICAN JOURNAL OF PSYCHIATRY "...a thorough grounding in what is a relatively new field. This is more than a basic text and...should be required reading for all criminal investigators." -CRIME AND JUSTICE INTERNATIONAL "...an important contribution to the systematic study of the behavioural evidence linked to the perpetration of serious crimes...Brent Turvey's opus is a major and much needed step toward professionalism [of criminal profiling.]" -THE EXPERT, In the third edition of this very popular textbook, Brent Turvey clearly demonstrates that criminal profiling has established itself as a scientific endeavor rather than an exercise in investigative intuition. Paramount among these, he argues, is the method known as Behavioral Evidence Analysis, which is described and illustrated in great detail throughout this remarkable book. Three aspects of Criminal Profiling will immediately become apparent to the reader. First, the amount of information contained within its pages is encyclopedic. Second, the Behavioral Evidence Analysis model espoused by Turvey is multidisciplinary in nature. Quite appropriately, Turvey explains the importance to the profiling process of expertise in crime reconstruction, criminal investigation, victimology, wound analysis, criminalistics, law, psychology, psychiatry, criminology, and other disciplines. I am aware of no other treatise which so skillfully blends such a variety of disparate fields into the skill set required to undertake criminal profiling. Third, Turvey and various contributors to this edition have no qualms about critiquing other members of the profiling community with whose methods they frankly disagree. While their critical analyses may sometimes seem uncharacteristically blunt for an academic and professional treatise, it is often through such a clash of ideas that a valid body of professional knowledge eventually emerges. Suffice it to say that readers of this text will have no doubts about where Turvey and others stand on several methodological issues central to criminal profiling. The first several chapters of Criminal Profiling deal with foundational matters such as the history of profiling, major approaches to profiling, and the contributions of mental health professionals to the criminal profiling process. In Chapter 5, Turvey teams up with noted Australian criminologist and profiler Dr. Wayne Petherick to review the basic tenets of Behavioral Evidence Analysis, the major approach to profiling preferred by the authors of and contributors to this textbook. The reader is introduced to the centrality of physical evidence, victimology, and behavioral crime scene analysis to the criminal profiling process. Several subsequent chapters then address the topics of crime reconstruction, wound pattern analysis, and case linkage in an applied fashion. It is this practical as well as theoretical approach to criminal profiling which makes this book not only fascinating to student and professional readers but highly didactic as well. Turveys encyclopedic approach includes analyses of several topics the uninitiated might not readily identify as pertinent to the profiling process. For example, false allegations, psychological autopsies, sexual asphyxia and behavioral aspects of fire and explosive situations are examined. Contemporary hot topics such as terrorism and criminal behavior on the Internet are also viewed through a behavior analytic lens. The textbook is, therefore, both comprehensive and timely. In conclusion, I would like to make some additional observations which should, in themselves, recommend this book to professors, students, and practitioners. The inclusion of multiple case examples throughout the text is masterful in its ability to allow the reader to relate to the material. An additional benefit of this text is that the reader will not only come away with an understanding of criminal profiling, but also with multiple insights into both criminology and deviant behavior. Finally, because this textbook consists of, "This textbook pulls together an impressive amount of substantive knowledge from a variety of disciplines in order to provide the reader with a foundation upon which to develop a mastery of the criminal profiling process. --Daniel Kennedy, PhD, Forensic Criminologist Professor, University of Detroit Mercy in a pre-publication review of the third edition of Criminal Profiling "The third edition of Criminal Profiling is sterling!" --Stan Crowder, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Criminal Justice, Kennesaw State University, GA, Praise for the previous editions: "This text documents the principles of proper criminal profiling and undertakes to establish definite criteria for professionalization...should be reviewed by anyone intent on becoming a professional criminal profiler."
