Banished from the Massachusetts Bay Colony in 1635, Williams founded Providence, Rhode Island, as a place where Indian and English cultures could flourish side by side. The Puritans, however, sought to gain control over all of Rhode Island's English settlements and achieve mastery over the Narragansetts. Williams and the tribe waged a forty-year resistance against their efforts.
