Product Information

THE NEW VIRTUAL CLASSROOM Evidence-Based Guidelines for Synchronous e-Learning ORGANIZATIONS involved in workforce learning have embraced the virtual classroom, a synchronous form of e-learning, which offers powerful instructional environments while saving travel time and costs associated with face-to-face classroom training. However, virtual classroom technology must be leveraged in ways that promote learning or the cost savings are merely an illusion. The New Virtual Classroom draws on current research in multimedia learning as well as practitioner experience to show how to effectively harness the power of the virtual classroom. Written by Ruth Clark, co-author of the best selling e-Learning & the Science of Instruction , and Ann Kwinn both recognized experts in instructional design and workforce learning, this important resource includes guidelines, research, and illustrative examples that clearly show how to leverage the powerful instructional features in the new virtual classroom. A practical resource, the book includes the key guidelines for initiating and maintaining participant engagement in virtual classroom sessions. Specifically, you will learn how to leverage the whiteboard with meaningful visuals, create social presence with audio, and maintain involvement with frequent effective interactions using polling, whiteboard, application sharing, audio and chat facilities. Beyond these fundamentals, you can learn how to manage cognitive load, blend your virtual classroom with other learning events, and adapt problem-based learning designs to virtual classroom technology. The book also outlines the seven principles of effective virtual classroom design and offers tested techniques for converting face-to-face classroom courses into virtual classroom events as well as creating virtual classroom events from scratch. An accompanying CD includes three short virtual classroom lessons to demonstrate the basic techniques described in the book. In the demonstrations you will see how to apply virtual classroom technology to a lesson teaching computer procedures as well as to more conceptual content.

Reviews
"Finally, the virtual classroom has become about techniques and not technology ? and practitioners are realizing that it is a medium deserving of its own best practices. One of the few dedicated resources available for this fast-growing field, The New Virtual Classroom is for the individual or organization ready to make the leap from information push to training and learning, and finally start to realize a return on their virtual classroom investment."--Jennifer Hofmann, Synchronous Learning Expert and author of The Synchronous Trainer's Survival Guide and Live and Online: Tips, Techniques, and Ready-to-Use Activities for the Virtual Classroom

This book's companion CD contains a variety of sample lessons that should give you a good feel for the virtual classroom in general and give you realistic examples of the techniques discussed in the book. If you are involved developing or delivering procedural training, such as for using soft- ware, we recommend viewing the How to Use Formulas in Excel lesson. A more principle-based or less step-by-step type of task is taught in the Defining Business Goals lesson, and the Planning an Interview lesson rethinks the same content in a problem-based structure, which you may find interesting if you want to see the difference between this and the more standard directive architecture. You can access the samples as they are mentioned in the book, especially at the end of each chapter as you reach the On The New Virtual Classroom CD section, or you can "go to the movies" after reading a few chapters when you want a break. Or, you can leave the CD in its envelope for a while until you want some inspiration for designing your next virtual class. You may even simply enjoy seeing a virtual classroom tool that is different from your own. We have used Elluminate. Instructors can show portions of these demonstrations in either a face-to-face or virtual class. The CD also contains Virtual Classroom Planning and Support Documents that you can use in designing and implementing your synchronous courses. The Virtual Classroom Readiness Checklist helps you to decide if the course you have in mind is appropriate for the virtual classroom and gives some of the factors that recommend the virtual classroom as a delivery media plus the elements of a synchronous-friendly organization. Once you have made the decision to move forward with this type of delivery, you can use the Virtual Classroom Lesson Inventory and Script to plan and lead your session. Finally, a sample Welcome Letter is included that you can adapt and distribute to your students to make sure they are ready for the great instruction you have prepared for them.
