Settlers arrived in the 1870s, and by the summer of 1918 Laguna's first art gallery opened, featuring works by a growing collective of local artists. Hundreds of visitors came on opening day and, in the next month, 2,000 more visited the small art gallery. In 1932, Laguna started what would become a world-renowned event called the Festival of the Arts and later added the equally famous Pageant of the Masters. Since its simple beginnings as a small village situated where Laguna Canyon opens onto the Pacific shoreline to the reason there are traffic jams on Coast Highway during hot-month weekends, this southern Orange County jewel has continued to be a great draw for beachgoers, painters, and nature lovers the world over.

Title: Photo book covers 100 years of Laguna Beach history Author: Chris Caesar Publisher: The Orange County Register Date: 3/26/09 Local film student Claire Marie Vogel may be finishing her degree at California Institute of the Arts this spring, but her first major release won't be on the big screen. Instead, the resident has authored a photographic history of Laguna Beach, incorporating more than 500 photos from the Historical Society, library and residents with ties to the city's past. The book, from Arcadia Publishing, is one of several in a series chronicling local histories throughout the United States. "I moved around a lot as a child, but I moved to Laguna when I was a junior in high school," Vogel said. "I consider it my hometown." Spanning a hundred-year period between the late 19th and 20th centuries, "Laguna Beach" offers residents a surprising look at the city's earliest days as an art colony through the late 1970s. Vogel said many of the pictures of late-19th-century Laguna impressed her - especially the book's opening photograph of families camping outside Main Beach in the 1870s. "The city has tried hard to maintain its feel, but, of course, things have changed," she said. On the other hand, some things remain the same - the city, sometimes called the "Riviera of America, always has provided a cool bubble of protection from inland heat. Vogel also plans to write a book on the history of Cal Arts. "It's a great school and people have heard of it," she said. "But not many know its story." Vogel will sign copies of "Laguna Beach" on April 7 at Latitude 33 Bookshop, 311 Ocean Ave., Laguna Beach.

Johnny Winter was a relatively unknown blues/rock guitarist with only an eponymously released album (included as a bonus disc) before he was selected to be among a relatively small number of lesser known artists to perform at Woodstock. His performance is electrifying on the Woodstock complete concert CD. Woodstock essentially helped to launch his career as a world class blues/rock guitarist. His younger brother, Edgar, performs keyboards and saxophone on three songs. Fantastic concert!
