Celebrating the vitality of comtemporary Native art, Native American Art in the Twentieth Century traces the political context of Native American art production from the 1890's to the present, and engages with a range of concepts and issues such as the influence of spirituality in Native art, and the struggle for artistic self-determination. With contributions from anthropologists, art historians, curators and practising artists, this collection examines pottery, painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography and performance art by some of the most celebrated Native American and Canadian artists of our time. From the Pueblo pottery revival to the invention and marketing of modern Inuit art, contributors offer new interprative stategies based on Native culture and knowledge, stressing the significance of tradition, mythology and ceremony in the production of Native art, and conceptualising recent art in terms of home, homeland and aboriginal sovereignty.
